What villains did not appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home?

However way you cut it, Spider-Man: No Way Home is a mammoth Spider-Man movie, chock full of milestone moments, stand-out scenes, and iconic characters. It is also a film loaded with villains, with the movie’s main group of adversaries being some of Spidey’s most famous foes.

But these aren’t just nefarious fiends plucked from the comics, these are Spidey villains taken directly from the movies. The core group of villains in Spider-Man: No Way Home have been lifted from Spidey films of yesteryear, dating all the way back to 2002’s Spider-Man.

The villains who appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home include: The Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, The Sandman, The Lizard, and Electro. Venom also puts in a brief appearance during a mid-credit scene.

But what about all the villains that DON’T appear in the movie? Again, I’m not talking about characters from the comics, but villains that have previously appeared in old Spidey movies and who were NOT included in Spider-Man: No Way Home?

Are there many villains missing from the film? Well, the simple answer is ‘yes’.

There are a couple of key reasons why only a selection of villains appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home and the most obvious reason is due to restrictions associated with the budget and the story. It doesn’t matter how big you want to make your movie, there’s only so much money, so much actor availability, and so much screen time to go around.

The other reason for a limited number of villains is because one of the key story beats in the film is the idea that only certain villains can appear in this Spidey universe (aka the MCU). Those villains are characters who already know Spider-Man’s secret identity.

Thing is, there are plenty of villains who know that Peter Parker and Spider-Man are one and the same. So, if Spider-Man: No Way Home had wanted to include every villain that knows Peter’s secret, then more foes would have to be included.

The villains from past movies, who did not appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but who DO KNOW Peter Parker’s secret identity include:

• Harry Osborn/New Goblin (Spider-Man 1 – 3)
• Dennis Carradine (Spider-Man 1 and Spider-Man 3)
• Eddie Brock/Venom (Spider-Man 3)
• Mr. Fiers (The Amazing Spider-Man & The Amazing Spider-Man 2)
• Harry Osborn/Green Goblin (The Amazing Spider-Man 2)
• Vulture (Spider-Man: Homecoming)
• Mysterio (Spider-Man: Far From Home)

So, that’s quite a few villains. But even though that’s a pretty big list, it’s not all the villains from the past Spider-Man movies.

Had Spider-Man: No Way Home wanted to include all the villains from the previous Spidey films, it would have also needed to include the following characters. These are villains that don’t know Peter Parker’s secret identity, but who have appeared in the movies:

• Convenience store thief (The Amazing Spider-Man)
• Norman Osborn (The Amazing Spider-Man)
• Aleksei Sytsevich/Rhino (The Amazing Spider-Man 2)
• Alastair Smythe (The Amazing Spider-Man 2)
• Shocker (Spider-Man: Homecoming)
• Mac Gargan/Scorpion (Spider-Man: Homecoming)
• The Tinkerer (Spider-Man: Homecoming)

So, while there are a great bunch of villains in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the villains that were included in the film were only a small selection taken from a pretty exhaustive list.
