Published by Marvel Comics in 1991, No One Gets Outta Here Alive is a Spider-Man story about the wall-crawler’s near brush with death. The comic was written by Ann Nocenti, with art by Rick Leonardi, and originally appeared in Spider-Man issue #17.
What happens in Spider-Man: No One Gets Outta Here Alive?
While heading across town on an errand, Spider-Man stumbles upon an incident involving two workmen. The workmen are on an external platform, hanging from the side of a building, when a cable snaps and the men topple over.
Spider-Man manages to catch the men, but is unable to stop the platform from falling into a piece of machinery below. The impact triggers an explosion, killing Spider-Man in the process.
Spider-Man’s spirit passes on, only to be greeted by two figures: Thanos and Death. Thanos reveals to Spider-Man that while he managed to save the workmen and a woman who lived in a neighbouring apartment, he did not save the woman’s daughter.
Spider-Man pleads for the girl’s life, but Thanos refuses and a fist fight ensues. Although Thanos views the battle as futile, Spider-Man’s determination is enough to convince Death to give him and the girl another chance at life.
The spirits of both Spider-Man and the girl are returned to their bodies. They awake, having miraculously cheated death.
Is Spider-Man: No One Gets Outta Here Alive a good read?
Spanning just one issue, No One Gets Outta Here Alive is a short, but solid Spider-Man story, which quickly gets to the heart of the character – his unwavering devotion to others. In the story, Spider-Man dies while helping people he doesn’t know, and he squares up to Thanos (even when it seems pointless) to give a young girl another chance at life.
At no point in the story is Spider-Man concerned about his own life; only that of others. And it is this selfless approach, as well as his determination, which reverses the events of the incident.
Often, the best Spidey stories are those that boast a simple premise, but stick with you long after you finish reading them. I first read No One Gets Outta Here Alive when it was published in 1991 and it has remained with me ever since.
It is often said that actions speak louder than words, and it is Spider-Man’s actions in this story which speak volumes. Plus, who doesn’t want to see Spider-Man standing toe-to-toe with Thanos and Death?
Has Spider-Man: No One Gets Outta Here Alive been adapted for film?
No One Gets Outta Here Alive has not been adapted into a movie, and I don’t believe it will. The story is more suited to being a one-off comic book tale rather than a big screen adventure, so that is where it is likely to stay.
In terms of movies, Thanos’ time in the MCU also seems to have come and gone. I can’t imagine this story would now become part of his on screen journey.
