You may have heard of the Marvel movie Silver & Black – but what is it?
Silver & Black was a proposed live-action Spider-Man spin-off movie, based on the Marvel characters, Silver Sable and Black Cat. The film was conceived as a female-led comic book movie, that would become part of Sony Picture’s Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Silver & Black was originally scheduled for release on February 8th 2019. However, the movie was put on hold in 2018, before being cancelled.
What happened to Silver & Black?
In June 2018, Sony Pictures put its Spidey spin-off on hold, without any explanation. Then two months later, in August 2018, news began to circulate that the project was being pulled from Sony’s schedules, because the studio wanted to move in a new direction.
Instead of producing one movie revolving around two characters, Sony was keen to produce two movies: Black Cat and Silver Sable. The two projects would join Sony’s ever-expanding list of Spider-Man movie spin-offs that so far include Venom (2018), Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), Morbius (2020), Venom 2 (2020), and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 (2022).
Black Cat and Silver Sable as separate movies
So, where are the projects up to at present? Well currently, both Black Cat and Silver Sable are still in development, but neither have a confirmed release date as of yet.
Has Silver Sable been featured in a Spider-Man movie before?
To date, Silver Sable has not been featured in a Spider-Man movie. The character has also not been referenced or even teased in any other Marvel film.
Often when it comes to comic book movies, films will drop a hint about a character which then may or may not be featured in a sequel. The Spider-Man series has done this on a number of occasions with established Spidey characters, but so far nothing for Silver Sable.
Has Felicia Hardy / Black Cat been featured in a Spider-Man movie?
To date, Felicia Hardy has appeared in a Spider-Man movie. The character was briefly featured in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, where she was played by Felicity Jones.
In the movie, Felicia was Harry Osborn’s personal assistant. At no point during the course of the film was it implied that Felicia would become a costumed character, however, Hardy was inserted into the movie for ‘potential’ inclusion in The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and beyond.
Speaking about her character during an interview with Yahoo Movies in February 2019, Jones said:
“There was never anything written down that that would definitely happen. It was more just…I like playing characters where there is a little bit extra to play with and it was just fun to play someone who has this other identity.
“I just loved the idea of that character, I just think it’s really fun.”
In addition to her appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Felicia Hardy was also rumoured to appear in Sam Raimi’s aborted Spider-Man 4. However, that movie never came to fruition.
