Most Spider-Man movies focus on one super hero, namely Spider-Man. The 2018 animated movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse finds room for multiple Spider-people.
So, who are the Spider-characters that appear in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse? And which of them is the ‘real’ Spider-Man?
“There’s only one Spider-Man – and you’re looking at him.”
The first Spider-character that is introduced in Into the Spider-Verse is Peter Parker aka Spider-Man. This version of Spider-Man is voiced by Chris Pine.
During the opening moments of the movie it is established that this Spider-Man has operated alone for ten years and lives in the same dimension as Miles Morales (see below). Thanks to references to Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007) it is heavily implied that this is the same Spidey from the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie trilogy (2002 – 2007).
Of all the Spider-people that appear on this list, this is the only one who does not survive the events of the movie. This Spider-Man is injured in a battle with the Green Goblin and is killed by the Kingpin.

Miles Morales is the second Spider-person introduced in the movie. Miles is a high school student who is bitten by a genetically altered spider.
Miles is granted unique powers, including the ability to become invisible and with the help of almost all of the Spider-people on this list, he becomes Spider-Man. Working with a team of heroes, Miles is able to save the multiverse and take his place as the new Spider-Man of his universe.
- Miles Morales is voiced by Shameik Moore
“You don’t get to like my haircut.”
The third Spider-character introduced in Into the Spider-Verse is Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Woman. Gwen is a high school student at the same school as Miles Morales, but in her initial appearances it is implied that she is hiding a secret.
When Gwen reappears in costume, she explains that she is called Spider-Woman and has similar abilities to Peter Parker. These abilities were given to her after she was bitten by a radioactive spider.
As with all of the other Spider-characters in Into the Spider-Verse, Gwen has experienced tragedy in her life. Her best friend – a Peter Parker from her universe – was killed, which led to her becoming a hero.
- Gwen Stacey is voiced by Hailee Steinfeld
Peter B. Parker/Spider-Man
“You know, it doesn’t matter how many times I get hit, I always get back up.”
Spider-person No.4 is Peter B. Parker, as played by Jake Johnson. This version of Spider-Man has operated in his dimension for 22 years and has experienced ups and downs in both his professional and personal careers.
Peter B. Parker invested in a restaurant (which didn’t do very well), he married then divorced Mary Jane Watson, and he buried Aunt May. When he first appears in Into the Spider-Verse he is a shadow of his former self and is out of shape.
Ultimately, Parker acts as a mentor to Miles Morales and is one of the driving forces in helping him to become the next Spider-Man.

“Peter knew how dangerous the job was, but he figured the only one who could stop this guy was Spider-Man.”
Spider-character No. 5 is Aunt May – Peter Parker’s aunt. May Parker does not have any spider powers, or even a code name, but she is very much a part of the Spider team.
May lives in the same universe as Miles and looks after Peter Parker’s secret Spidey lair, where he keeps his spare suits and vehicles. May is the centre-point to the group and brings all of the Spider-Men/Women/Pigs together.
- Aunt May is voiced by Lily Tomlin
Spider-Man Noir/Peter Parker
“Wherever I go, the wind follows – and the wind smells like rain.”
Spidey No.6 is Peter Parker aka Spider-Man Noir. In the universe that Parker comes from the year is 1933 and everything is in black-and-white.
Parker is a private investigator who was bitten by a radioactive spider. As a masked hero, Spider-Man Noir fights Nazis.
- Spider-Man Noir is voiced by Nicolas Cage
“We’re just trying to find a way home.”
Spider-character No. 7 is Peni Parker aka Sp//dr. Peni is tech-savvy, comes from the year 3145, and has a psychic link with a radioactive spider that lives inside her father’s robot.
- Peni Parker is voiced by Kimiko Glenn
“Miles, the hardest thing about this job is you can’t save everybody.”
The eighth Spider-character in Into the Spider-Verse is Peter Porker aka Spider-Ham. Peter gained his abilities when he was bitten by a radioactive pig.
By day, Peter works as a photographer for the Daily Beagle. When he’s not taking photographs, he fights crime as Spider-Ham.
- Spider-Ham is voiced by John Mulaney
Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099
“Ok, so we’re just going to roll the dice on this?”
The ninth Spider-character is Miguel O’Hara the Spider-Man of the year 2099. O’Hara is introduced during a post-credit scene, where he is seen travelling from his dimension to the dimension of Spider-Man ’67 (see below).
- Spider-Man 2099 is voiced by Oscar Isaac
Peter Parker/Spider-Man ’67
“How dare you point at me?”
And finally, the tenth Spider-character in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is Spider-Man ’67. This Spider-Man comes from the 1967 Spider-Man animated show.
- Spider-Man ’67 is Jorma Taccone
Who is the real Spider-Man?
OK, so a quick recap: The Spider-characters in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse are:
- Peter Parker / Spider-Man
- Miles Morales / Spider-Man
- Gwen Stacy / Spider-Woman
- Peter B. Parker / Spider-Man
- Aunt May
- Peter Parker / Spider-Man Noir
- Peni Parker / Sp//dr
- Peter Porker / Spider-Ham
- Miguel O’Hara / Spider-Man 2099
- Peter Parker / Spider-Man ‘67
So, that is a total of ten Spider-characters, but who is the real Spider-Man?
The answer? All of them.
A major story beat of Into the Spider-Verse is that anyone can be Spider-Man – they just have to believe in themselves and do the right thing.
The point of the movie is that every Spider-person in Into the Spider-Verse is a hero and is deserving of the Spider name. All of these characters have experienced loss and all have had to step up and take charge, even when times are tough.
