Most Spider-Man movies focus on one super hero, namely Spider-Man. The 2018 animated movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse finds room for multiple Spider-people.

So, who are the Spider-characters that appear in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse? And which of them is the ‘real’ Spider-Man?

“There’s only one Spider-Man – and you’re looking at him.”

The first Spider-character that is introduced in Into the Spider-Verse is Peter Parker aka Spider-Man. This version of Spider-Man is voiced by Chris Pine.

During the opening moments of the movie it is established that this Spider-Man has operated alone for ten years and lives in the same dimension as Miles Morales (see below). Thanks to references to Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007) it is heavily implied that this is the same Spidey from the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie trilogy (2002 – 2007).

Of all the Spider-people that appear on this list, this is the only one who does not survive the events of the movie. This Spider-Man is injured in a battle with the Green Goblin and is killed by the Kingpin.

When Gwen reappears in costume, she explains that she is called Spider-Woman and has similar abilities to Peter Parker. These abilities were given to her after she was bitten by a radioactive spider.

As with all of the other Spider-characters in Into the Spider-Verse, Gwen has experienced tragedy in her life. Her best friend – a Peter Parker from her universe – was killed, which led to her becoming a hero.

Who is the real Spider-Man?

Image: ©Sony Pictures/Marvel Entertainment

OK, so a quick recap: The Spider-characters in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse are:

  • Peter Parker / Spider-Man
  • Miles Morales / Spider-Man
  • Gwen Stacy / Spider-Woman
  • Peter B. Parker / Spider-Man
  • Aunt May
  • Peter Parker / Spider-Man Noir
  • Peni Parker / Sp//dr
  • Peter Porker / Spider-Ham
  • Miguel O’Hara / Spider-Man 2099
  • Peter Parker / Spider-Man ‘67

So, that is a total of ten Spider-characters, but who is the real Spider-Man?

The answer? All of them.

A major story beat of Into the Spider-Verse is that anyone can be Spider-Man – they just have to believe in themselves and do the right thing.

The point of the movie is that every Spider-person in Into the Spider-Verse is a hero and is deserving of the Spider name. All of these characters have experienced loss and all have had to step up and take charge, even when times are tough.
