If you own a home video copy of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) – including a DVD or Blu-ray edition of the film – then you may be aware that a number of X-Men characters appear in the movie. One of these characters is Mystique, as played by Jennifer Lawrence.
The X-Men appear in a post-credit scene, which takes place at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The scene makes no reference to Spider-Man or any Spider-Man-related characters, and Spidey actor Andrew Garfield does not appear on screen.
So, what is this X-Men scene all about?
What is the X-Men scene in The Amazing Spider-Man 2?
The X-Men scene in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 takes place on a military camp and involves Mystique, Havoc and a number of additional mutants. The scene sees Mystique impersonating an officer, in order to infiltrate the camp and free a number of mutants from William Stryker.
The sequence lasts approximately one minute in length and is very action-orientated. Those who have watched the 2014 film, X-Men: Days of Future Past will be familiar with the scene, as it is directly lifted from the movie.
As you may also be aware, the scene has nothing to do with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and nor should it, as it was not produced for inclusion in the movie. The scene was instead added to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 prior to its worldwide theatrical release.
Why is the X-Men scene in The Amazing Spider-Man 2?
The scene appears as a post credit sequence due to a deal that was agreed between Sony Pictures – makers of the Spider-Man movies – and 20th Century Fox – the then producers of the X-Men movie series. And this is why…
Marc Webb, the director of The Amazing Spider-Man was asked by Sony to direct The Amazing Spider-Man 2. However, at that point in time he had a contract with 20th Century Fox which would have made him unable to take on the Spidey project for Sony.
In order for Webb to direct The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony had to come to an arrangement with Fox that would free up the director. That arrangement was for Sony to include a short scene of X-Men: Days of Future Past in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Both films were released during the same summer and Fox believed that a little promotion in the Spider-Man movie would be good business for X-Men. After all, with both movies being comic book films there was considerable crossover appeal.
Once the deal was struck, the scene was added to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as a post credit sequence – something which comic book movie fans have become accustomed to thanks to numerous post credit scenes appearing in many Marvel movies. However, while the scene appears as a post credit sequence, it is in reality just an advert for X-Men: Days of Future Past as it has no relevance or connection to the Spider-Man movie that it sits in.
When the scene first showed up in cinemas, audiences were a little puzzled and came to the assumption that it meant the Spider-Man and X-Men films were linking together in some way. But this was not the case and nor was it ever intended to be – it was purely about promotion.
Is the X-Men scene in every copy of The Amazing Spider-Man 2?
It would appear that the deal that was struck between Sony Pictures and 20th Century Fox had a finite life span. As such, once the deal was up, Sony removed the scene from copies of the film.
So, if you own a copy of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the X-Men scene does not appear in your version of the movie, then it simply means you own one of the later releases.
When The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was released on Blu-ray, I picked up a copy and it included the scene. I later bought a digital edition of the movie and the scene was removed.
