Between 2012 and 2014, Sony Pictures released two live-action Spider-Man movies under the banner heading of The Amazing Spider-Man. The films were conceived as a reboot to the previous Spider-Man movie series (Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy) and introduced a new take on the story, with a revised origin, new villains and new actors in the lead roles.

Andrew Garfield took on the part of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, with Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben and Sally Field as Aunt May. Villains across the two movies included Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors/The Lizard, Jamie Foxx as Max Dillon/Electro, Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn/Green Goblin and Paul Giamatti as Aleksei Sytsevich/Rhino.

The Amazing Spider-Man series was designed to supersede Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and build a new series, with countless sequels and spinoffs. However, the Amazing film series was cancelled after two pictures, paving the way for another reboot – the Tom Holland/Marvel Cinematic Universe-era of Spider-Man movies.

But in its short existence, how much money did The Amazing Spider-Man films make?

Why were The Amazing Spider-Man movies cancelled?

I have previously looked at the financial success of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy in my post How much money did Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy make?. If you have not read through this post yet, I recommend giving it a read. However, to briefly summarise, the Sam Raimi-directed Spider-Man films were big hits for Sony Pictures with the most successful entry being Spider-Man 3, which made over $890 million.

Released five years after Spider-Man 3, The Amazing Spider-Man didn’t prove quite so popular and took almost $150 million less than its predecessor. It was the lowest grossing entry in Sony’s Spider-Man movie series – until The Amazing Spider-Man 2 came along.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 arrived two years later and took less money than The Amazing Spider-Man, which meant the series was now on a profit decline. The films were still making a considerable amount of money, but with a rise in budgets and a drop in box office returns, it was clear the series was not performing as well as the studio had hoped.

Sony had planned to launch a Spider-Verse around The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but the box office returns, plus the lukewarm reception suggested this was not the best way forward for the series. The studio wanted to build a universe around a successful film, rather than a less successful one.

Sony ultimately made the decision to cancel any forthcoming projects connected to The Amazing Spider-Man films, including the proposed The Amazing Spider-Man 3. This also meant cancelling The Sinister Six – a villain team-up film that was heavily teased in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Cancelling The Amazing Spider-Man series was a business decision to provide the Spider-Man film series with a fresh start. The Spider-Man movies have proved to be important films for Sony Pictures, and incredibly high earners, so reinvention was deemed the best way forward.
